An Allegory

Queen of ice
Goddess of the crystal river
Danced along the hilltops
Prancing as her feel barely touched the ground
She watched the world
From behind a cold blue icy glare
And the queen of ice
Imagined she was the most beautiful princess
In the land

Hidden among her snow covered trees
Nestled in the pure glittering whiteness
Of snow’s first fall with exquisite crystal snowflakes
Drifting all around
The queen of ice had her share of delights

But sometimes in the deep of night
When there was no fire glowing in the hearth
And nothing but the blackness with the glittering stars outside
The Queen of ice got cold
Cold enough to even pierce
The shackles the frozen shell
She wore around her heart

So the queen of ice spun a web
She made it of the finest silk
And in the spring when her frozen kingdom
Became warm enough so the rain would fall
Dew collected on her silver web
And in the morning when the sun rose
And kissed the dewdrops with its golden beams
The goddess of the crystal river
Realized she had created something more beautiful
Even than herself

She caught an angel in her web
And angel flying free high up in the heavens
Who had seen the sparkling glowing light
And had not been able to resist it’s lure

And the queen of ice kept her angel
And the angel loved her
The angel lit a fire in her hearth
And the queen clung to him for warmth

The angel’s presence brought summer
to the queen’s frozen domain
A summer where the sun shined brighter than any other
Birds came, and they perched in the trees
Their songs filled the heart of the queen of ice
Animals scurried under foot
And rainbow flowers bloomed where there once had only been
A cold white blanket

The warmth was good
But it became too much for the frozen queen
As the ice around her heart began to melt
And it felt like pain

The queen told her angel
I only want this warmth in the night
When the darkness outside
Threatens to overwhelm
Keep your fire inside the house
And leave my forest outside alone
For I miss my drifting snowflakes
And I miss my frozen river
And I miss the quiet sound
Of nothing but the wind in the trees

So the queen shut her angel up inside the house
And the queen was satisfied

She didn’t notice that her angel’s wings
That had once been so brilliant
With the colors of fire
Yellow, orange and gold
Began to fade to grey and brown
And his face began to grow old
His eyes vacant and staring

The queen would cling to him at night
And with her touch
ice crystals began to form between the feathers in his wings
So that he was burdened by the weight of them

Then one day the angel saw
From through the window
Another glowing star
Much like the one that had brought him to this place
But brighter and more brilliant

And the angel knew if he was to live
He must pluck out every feather from his wings
That had a touch of ice
No matter what the pain
So he would have the strength to fly
Towards that shining light
Into a land that was full of warmth and fire

And the queen of ice saw her angel plucking his wings
And she said, “my angel, why are you doing such a thing
Pulling out every remembrance of me
Every part of you that I have touched
Doesn’t my ice sparkle and catch the light
Isn’t it so beautiful”

And the angel pointed longingly out the window
And the queen of ice saw that brilliant shining light
And she looked around at her dark room
And she knew what she must do

She opened her hand
She blew on the wind
A goodbye kiss
And she let her angel go

Then she laid down on the floor
She folded her wings
With no fire to warm her body
The ice grew up around her like a coffin
And the queen of ice closed her eyes
A single crystal tear
Freezing before it reached the bottom of her cheek
And died
