I Remember

A single tear rolling down his cheek
at the thought that he might never come to know
all the secrets I keep inside so deep
that he worked so hard to help me show

Fireflies flitting in the cool night air -
the first fireflies I had ever seen
This first of many evening walks we got to share
seemed to me like something out of a dream

The porchlight shining into his face
highlighting the features I adore
as he told me of scars time had not erased
which he had been scared to show me before

Rose petals scattered all over the ground
Lying in the grass under the orange tree
Looking up at the sky and all around
through branches that hung over him and me

Watching me sitting in my rocking chair
my eyes closed in a silent muse
He got out his guitar, sat across from me there
and sang to me The Moody Blues

The sharp tickle of a paint brush on my skin
and the even sharper rise of my heart
as he traced my lips around their rim
gazing at me like a work of art -
watercolor painting forgotten

The warmth of his arms around mine
It was time to go, but we didn't care
The night after we'd met for the first time
he saved all the strands of my hair
that had gotten stuck to his sweater
While pressed against his chest I was aware
up to this moment life had never been better

Flower petals falling from the tree
swirling around as the wind blows
And I described to him the beautiful scenes I see
when I listen to music with my eyes closed

The tickle of his eyelash on my face
the clean smell of his hair crumpled in my hands
the softness of his skin and its sweet taste
the delights of snuggling close to my man

Sitting across from each other on the floor
staring into his eyes with unquenchable thirst
until we couldn't take it anymore
Seeing who would have to look away first

He had to check to make sure no one was around
right before our first kiss
How this moment made my heart pound
my stomach tie up in knots and twists

The excitement of each new day
The fantastic unbelievable things he would say
In a world where all my dreams were coming true
Every experience was exhilarating and new

And later the sweet tenderness of days shared
Friendship, laughter, warmth, and trust
Coming home at night to a man who cared
who I knew was able to take care of us

These are the words he has written on my heart
and he cannot erase them
Even if he should tear the whole thing apart
and I have to put it back together again

The brightest light I have ever known
will forever shine brighter to me
than any of the dark threads we have sown
into this part of our life's tapestry

Now as I go through my all my days
which in comparison seem so grey
I will thank the Lord for the years
which though brought many tears
brought even greater joy
which time and trouble cannot destroy

He may have forgotten, but I cannot
all the sweetness our love has brought
He loved me once, he showed me how
and that will have to be enough for now
